For a router table, the Bosch 1617EVSPK and Triton TRA001 take very different approaches. The Bosch is a compact 2.25-hp kit with separate fixed and plunge bases. The Triton is a larger 3.25-hp plunge router designed with table use in mind, including above-table height adjustment.

That makes the Triton the easier machine to install and adjust in a table. The Bosch is the more flexible handheld kit and is often the better buy if table routing is only one part of the job.

Why the Triton is easier to table-mount

The TRA001’s main advantage is its built-in above-table adjustment. Once the router is secured to a compatible router plate, you can raise or lower the bit from above the table using the supplied adjustment system. You do not need to reach underneath the table and turn a small depth knob every time you change a profile.

That matters during setup. A typical table-mounted router needs repeated adjustments to get a rabbet, dado, or edge profile exactly right. Moving the bit by fractions of a millimeter is much easier when the adjustment is accessible from the top. The Triton also has a top-accessible spindle-lock arrangement, which can make bit changes more convenient, although the exact ease depends on the router plate and insert opening.

The trade-off is size. The TRA001 is a substantial router, and its plunge mechanism occupies more space below the table than a compact fixed-base motor. Your table needs a suitable mounting plate with a large enough opening and adequate support. A thin, flexible plate can sag under the router’s weight, causing inconsistent cuts.

Before buying, check the plate manufacturer’s compatibility list. The mounting-hole pattern and the diameter of the router body determine whether the router bolts directly to the plate or needs a dedicated adapter.

Where the Bosch 1617EVSPK fits better

The Bosch does not offer the same convenient built-in table lift. Its fixed base can be attached to a router plate or table insert, but height adjustment is normally made from below. That is workable, but slower. You may need to shut off the router, reach under the table, loosen the base, adjust the depth, and retighten it. Small changes are more awkward, especially if the router is mounted in a deep cabinet.

A separate router lift solves much of this problem, but it changes the economics. A lift can cost as much as—or more than—the difference between the Bosch and Triton routers. The Bosch’s round motor body is compatible with many lift systems, but compatibility must be checked rather than assumed. Some lifts use a clamp designed for a specific motor diameter.

The Bosch kit’s advantage is that it includes both fixed and plunge bases. Remove the motor from the table and you have a capable handheld router with a familiar fixed base for edge work and a plunge base for mortises, stopped dados, and template routing. For a buyer who will use the router handheld 70 percent of the time, that versatility can be worth more than the Triton’s table adjustment.

Its lower 2.25-hp output is still enough for most cabinet and furniture work. It can handle common 1/2-inch shank bits, but take sensible passes in hardwood. A deep 3/4-inch profile should usually be made in two or more passes rather than forced through in one cut.

Power, speed, and cutter size

The Triton has a clear power advantage. Its 15-amp motor is better suited to large panel-raising bits, wide rabbeting cutters, and long runs in hardwood. That extra capacity reduces the chance of bogging down, but it does not make aggressive one-pass cutting safe. Large cutters create substantial torque and should be used at reduced speed with controlled feed pressure.

The Bosch reaches 25,000 rpm, which is useful for small bits and clean work in softer materials. The Triton tops out at 21,000 rpm, giving it a more appropriate range for larger cutters. Always follow the cutter manufacturer’s maximum speed. Running a large bit too fast is a genuine failure mode: vibration, burning, and cutter damage can follow, and a broken carbide tip is a serious hazard.

Both routers use electronic speed control to help maintain speed under load. That feature improves cut consistency, but it cannot compensate for a dull bit, a loose collet, or feeding too quickly.

Installation and safety details that matter

Neither router should be treated as a complete table-routing system by itself. You still need a rigid table, a suitable plate, a guarded bit opening, a fence, and a switch that lets you shut the router off without reaching under the table. The factory trigger or lock-on arrangement should not be your only table-mounted control.

Leave enough clearance below the table for bit changes and dust collection. The Triton’s large body and plunge assembly can interfere with a shallow cabinet. The Bosch is easier to fit into compact tables, particularly when used with its fixed base.

Collet cleanliness is important with either model. Dust inside the collet can prevent full engagement and allow a bit to slip. Insert the shank fully, then pull it back slightly—about 1/16 inch—before tightening. Do not leave the bit bottomed against the collet. Inspect the bit after the first few cuts and stop if its cutting height has changed.

Which router kit should you buy?

Choose the Triton TRA001 if the router will live in a table, you regularly use 1/2-inch bits, or you want above-table adjustment without immediately buying a lift. Its extra power is useful for demanding profiles, and its design removes much of the frustration from repeated height changes.

Choose the Bosch 1617EVSPK if you need one router for handheld and table work. It is the more balanced kit, easier to handle outside a table, and generally sufficient for trim, joinery, roundovers, rabbets, and moderate hardwood routing. The cheaper option is fine when table mounting is occasional and you are willing to adjust the height from underneath.

If table work is the primary job, budget for a rigid router table plate with above-table adjustment and a proper switch. That accessory choice can matter as much as the router itself. The Triton gives you the simpler starting point; the Bosch becomes equally convenient only after you add the right mounting hardware.
